How to Play 4D in Malaysia: A Complete Beginner's Guide
4D is Malaysia's most popular number game, and the concept fits in one sentence: pick a four-digit number from 0000 to 9999, place a bet from as little as RM1, and if your number appears among the 23 winning numbers drawn that evening, you collect a fixed cash prize. Simple on the surface — but the details (which operator, Big or Small, straight or permutation) decide what you actually win.

What Is 4D, Exactly?
4D is a fixed-odds lottery. Every draw produces 23 winning four-digit numbers: a 1st, 2nd and 3rd Prize, plus ten Special numbers and ten Consolation numbers. Your payout depends only on two things — which category your number lands in, and which bet type you bought. Unlike jackpot games, the prize is not shared between winners: everyone holding the winning number gets the full advertised amount for their stake.
Step 1: Choose an Operator
Malaysia's players follow nine main draws, and they fall into three groups:

All of them announce results at 7:00 PM Malaysia Time. Step 2: Pick Your Four-Digit Number
Any combination from 0000 to 9999 is valid, and every combination has exactly the same probability. In practice, Malaysians love meaningful numbers — birthdays, car plates, house numbers, or digits spotted in a dream. There is nothing wrong with that: since the odds are identical for every number, you might as well play one you enjoy. Just know that popular "nice" numbers occasionally sell out, because operators cap how much they will accept on any single number.
Step 3: Decide Big, Small — or Both
This is the choice that confuses most first-timers. For the same number, you can place:
- Big (Besar): your number wins if it appears anywhere in the 23 winning numbers — 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Special or Consolation. Top payout: RM2,500 per RM1 on 1st Prize.
- Small (Kecil): your number only wins in the top three prizes, but pays more — RM3,500 per RM1 on 1st Prize.
- Both: many players split their stake, e.g. "RM1 Big + RM1 Small" on one number, which costs RM2 and covers both tables.

Step 4: Straight Number or Permutation (iBox)
A standard bet wins only if the digits match in exact order — 1234 and 1243 are completely different numbers. If you want to cover every ordering of your four digits, ask for a permutation bet (branded iBox, mBox or i-Perm depending on the operator). One stake covers all arrangements, with the payout divided by the number of permutations:

Permutation bets win far more often, but each win pays proportionally less. It is a trade-off between frequency and size, not a way to beat the game.
Step 5: Place the Bet and Keep the Slip
At any licensed outlet, tell the counter your number, bet type (Big/Small), amount, and which operator's draw you want — or tick them on the bet slip. The minimum is typically RM1 per number per bet type. You must be 21 or older to buy (more on the legal side in our tax and legal age guide).
Then guard the physical ticket. It is the only proof of your bet: prizes are paid against the original slip, and a lost ticket generally means a lost claim. Before you walk away, confirm the operator logo, draw date and numbers printed on it are what you asked for.

Draws close at 7:00 PM MYT and verified numbers appear online within minutes. Compare your ticket against all 23 numbers — a surprising share of wins are missed because players only glance at the top three prizes and skip the Special and Consolation grids. What Are the Real Odds?
There are 10,000 possible four-digit combinations. A Big bet wins if your number fills any of the 23 winning slots, so the chance of some win per draw is roughly 23 in 10,000 (about 0.23%). A Small bet covers only 3 slots — roughly 0.03% — in exchange for higher payouts. Those are the honest numbers, and no strategy changes them; each draw is independent of every draw before it.
