4D Prize Structure Explained: Big vs Small Bet Payouts

Every Malaysian 4D draw pays fixed odds: the amounts are printed in advance, they do not depend on how many people win, and they are the same whether you bet on a quiet Wednesday or a packed special draw. That makes the payout table the single most useful thing a player can memorise. Here is the complete structure, with the Big/Small trade-off and permutation maths explained properly.

The 23-Number Result Sheet

Each completed draw publishes 23 winning four-digit numbers:

  • 1st, 2nd and 3rd Prize — the three headline numbers,
  • 10 Special numbers, and
  • 10 Consolation numbers.

The layout is identical across operators — the sheet you see on the Magnum 4D result page has the same structure as Sports Toto, Da Ma Cai or GD Lotto. Which category your number lands in, combined with your bet type, decides the payout.

Big Bet: Payouts Per RM1

A Big (Besar) bet wins in any of the 23 slots:

Prize categoryNumbers drawnPayout per RM1
1st Prize1RM2,500
2nd Prize1RM1,000
3rd Prize1RM500
Special10RM180–RM200
Consolation10RM60

Why the range on Special? The classic operators' standard card pays RM180 per RM1, while several daily draws advertise RM200. The headline prizes are consistent across the industry, but always confirm the exact card at the counter where you buy.

Small Bet: Payouts Per RM1

A Small (Kecil) bet covers only the top three prizes — Special and Consolation numbers pay nothing — in exchange for materially higher payouts:

Prize categoryPayout per RM1
1st PrizeRM3,500
2nd PrizeRM2,000
3rd PrizeRM1,000
Special / Consolation— (not covered)

Big vs Small: How to Think About It

  • Big gives you 23 winning chances per draw. Most of the "small wins" players enjoy — the RM60 and RM180 hits — only exist on Big bets.
  • Small gives you 3 chances, but each pays 40–100% more than the Big equivalent.
  • Neither is mathematically "better" — the operator's margin is built into both tables. It is a choice between more frequent small wins (Big) and rarer, larger wins (Small).
  • The classic compromise is RM1 Big + RM1 Small on the same number: RM2 total, covering both tables. A 1st Prize hit on that ticket pays RM2,500 + RM3,500 = RM6,000.

Permutation (iBox) Payouts

Permutation play — iBox at Magnum, i-Perm at Sports Toto, similar options elsewhere — covers every ordering of your digits with one stake. The payout is the standard prize divided by the number of permutations covered:

Number typePermutationsApprox. 1st Prize (Big, per RM1)
4 different digits (e.g. 1234)24≈ RM104
One pair (e.g. 1123)12≈ RM208
Two pairs (e.g. 1122)6≈ RM417
Three of a kind (e.g. 1112)4≈ RM625

Exact figures vary slightly by operator card due to rounding, but the principle is universal: you win far more often, and far less per win. If you play permutations, read the basics in our beginner's guide to 4D first.

Three Worked Examples

Example 1: RM5 Big on 8823; the number takes 2nd Prize. Payout = 5 × RM1,000 = RM5,000.

Example 2: RM2 Small on 8823; the number appears as a Consolation. Payout = RM0 — Small bets do not cover Consolation. The same RM2 as a Big bet would have paid RM120.

Example 3: RM1 Big + RM1 Small on 8823; it takes 1st Prize. Payout = RM2,500 + RM3,500 = RM6,000 from a RM2 outlay.

Beyond Standard 4D

The fixed 4D table is only part of what draw nights produce. Sports Toto runs 5D, 6D and three lotto-style jackpot games whose pools climb into the tens of millions; Magnum adds Magnum Life and the 4D Jackpot; Da Ma Cai runs 1+3D and 3+3D variants. Those games use entirely different prize logic — see our classic operator comparison for what each brand offers beyond the standard sheet.

What the Operator Keeps: The Honest Maths

Fixed odds make the house margin easy to calculate, and it is worth seeing once. Take a RM1 Big bet: across 10,000 equally likely numbers, it pays RM2,500 + RM1,000 + RM500 on the top prizes, ten Specials at roughly RM180 each and ten Consolations at RM60. Add every winning slot up and the expected return is about 64 sen per RM1 staked — closer to 66 sen where Special pays RM200. A Small bet works out almost identically: (RM3,500 + RM2,000 + RM1,000) ÷ 10,000 = 65 sen per RM1.

Two useful conclusions follow. First, Big and Small are deliberately balanced — switching between them changes the shape of your wins (frequent-and-small versus rare-and-large), not their long-run value. Second, no number choice, timing trick or system alters that return rate; it is built into the payout card itself. 4D is entertainment with a lucky upside — budget for it the way you budget for cinema tickets, not the way you budget for savings.

Claiming What You Win

Prizes are generally claimable for six months from the draw date. Small amounts are paid at any of the operator's outlets against the original ticket; larger prizes are claimed at the operator's regional office with ID. Good news on the money itself: winnings are not taxed for individual players in Malaysia — the details are in our winnings, tax and legal age guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a Small bet win anything on a Special or Consolation number?

No. Small bets cover only the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Prize. Special and Consolation numbers pay out on Big bets only.

Are 4D payouts the same at every operator?

The headline structure is standard across the industry — RM2,500/1,000/500 Big and RM3,500/2,000/1,000 Small per RM1. Special-category payouts vary slightly (RM180 at the classic operators, up to RM200 at some daily draws), so confirm the card where you buy.

What happens if my number appears twice in the winning sheet?

You are paid for each occurrence. If your number shows up as both a Special and a Consolation, a Big bet collects both prizes.

How long do I have to claim a 4D prize?

Typically six months from the draw date, against the original winning ticket. After that, unclaimed prizes are forfeited under the operator's rules.
